Vegan Baklava

Ingredients

For The Syrup

  • Maple Syrup 2tbsps
  • Lemon Juice 1tsp
  • Sliced Lemon 2
  • Water 1/4cup
  • Granulated Sugar 1cup
  • Cinnamon stick 1

For The Filling

  • Nuts 2cups
  • Granulated Sugar 1/3cup
  • Cinnamon 1/2-1tsp
  • Salt 1/4tsp

For Baklava

  • Phyllo Sheets 24

For Brushing

  • Vegan Oil 6tbsp
  • Finely Chopped Pistachio 2tbsps

Toppings

  • Chopped nuts
  • Vegan Chocolate Chips 1/2cup

Baklava Ingredients Notes

Phyllo Dough: Another name for it is filo pastry.
Cinnamon: Use a pinch to give a mild cinnamon flavor.
Vegan Oil: Instead of this, you can use vegan butter.
Maple Syrup: You can use honey to give extra sweetness. But if you follow a vegan health plan, you can skip the honey.

Instructions

Making Sugar Syrup

  1. Put the granulated sugar and water in a small saucepan.
  2. Now, add maple syrup and cinnamon stick to this pan. Mix all ingredients.
  3. Next, put this pan over a medium flame on the burner.
  4. Simmer it until the ingredients boil.
  5. When ingredients boil, turn down the heat and cook it for an extra 10-12 minutes until the syrup thickens.
  6. Next, switch off the burner and remove the pan.
  7. Separate cinnamon sticks to the syrup.
  8. Add lime juice over the syrup. Let it cool in a normal environment.
  9. Meanwhile, we will cook other ingredients.

Prepare the filling

  1. Add nuts, cinnamon, salt, and granulated sugar to a food blender.
  2. Combine it well until all ingredients are smooth.

Prepare the Baklava

  1. First, warm the oven to 325 degrees to bake the baklava.
  2. Cut the phyllo sheets into two halves. Cover the sheets with wet towels to prevent dryness.
  3. Apply vegan butter to a baking pan. Uncover the phyllo sheets.
  4. Arrange phyllo sheets on a baking tray. Grease it with butter.
  5. Next, add the fillings over these sheets. Repeat the same directions to make multiple baklava layers.
  6. With the help of a cooking brush, grease the sheets with butter.
  7. After that, cut into square and zigzag shapes with the help of a sharp knife.
  8. Place the baking tray in the oven and bake the baklava for 15- 30 minutes until it becomes crispy and golden.
  9. Once the baklava is ready, instantly add syrup over the baklava.
  10. Before cutting, cool it at a normal place for 10-20 minutes.
  11. Garnish it with chopped nuts, and vegan chocolate chips.
  12. The sweet and tasty Baklava is ready.

Alternatives for strict diet followers

If you are a new member of Vegan and strictly follow the vegan recipe then you can be made changes to this recipe.
Nut-free: You can replace the almonds, cashews, or other nuts with melon and pumpkin seeds.
Sugar-free: If you are not a lover of sugar, you can skip it. Stevia and dates are used as an alternative.
Gluten-free: It’s not a gluten-free recipe. You can replace the ingredients like phyllo sheets with gluten-free sheets.

  • You can replace the cinnamon stick with ground cinnamon.

Normal Place: You can place the Vegan Baklava in a normal place for a week. It won’t change the baklava’s flavor.
Refrigerator: For 6-8 days, you can refrigerate the baklava.
Freezer: It is a freezer-friendly recipe. Place the baklava in an airtight box and freeze it for 3-4 months.
