Vegan Focaccia
Vegan Focaccia is an Italian-based bread recipe baked with flour, yeast, and olive oil. It features a beautiful brown, crispy outside and an extremely fluffy olive oil-coated inner side. This focaccia recipe uses only a few basic ingredients and yields bakery-style fresh results. You may enhance the flavor of Vegan Focaccia by adding toppings. This bread contains high carbs (27 grams) and a small amount of sugar, only one(1 gram). It is a vegan-friendly and gluten-free recipe until you can’t change the all-purpose flour with gluten flour. Bake this bread dish in an oven (time and temperature directions are listed below).

Ingredient Notes
Flour:
- I used all-purpose flour of King Arthur’s brand. It is easily available at any shop or mart. You can swap the flour for other options like bread or gluten-free flour.
Instant Yeast:
- We used fresh and high-quality yeast. Fresh yeast will give better results than old or expired instant yeast.
Warm Water:
- You need mild warm water to dissolve yeast. Too much hot water will ruin the yeast texture and will not dissolve.
Olive oil:
- I add (extra-virgin) olive oil to get a beautiful brown bread layer.
Flaky Sea Salt:
- An excellent flaky salt enhances the flavor of bread and adds a burst of flavor.
Vegan Butter:
- It is used to grease the pan.
Fresh Rosemary:
- Add over the focaccia bread before baking. Dried rosemary works well.
Instructions
- Apply vegan butter to a 9 by 13 ovenproof dish with a cooking brush.
- Next, lightly coat the base of the oiled dish with an additional (2) tablespoons of olive oil.
- Then, mix the salt, granulated white sugar, instant yeast, and all-purpose flour in a mixing dish.
- Pour two tablespoons of olive oil and warm water into the same dish.
- Mix well all items until they come together into a dough form.
- Shift this dough to the oven-proof dish.
- Set aside the dish for one to two hours in a warm place, so the dough rises well.
- Meanwhile, get the oven ready to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
- After two hours, check whether the dough rises or not.
- Now, create holes in the dough with your fingers after dipping them in the olive oil.
- Spread the two tablespoons of olive oil over the dough.
- Top it with fresh rosemary and flaky sea salt. Place this dish in an oven.
- Bake it for 15/20 minutes until an attractive golden brown crust is achieved.
- Once baked, shift into a serving plate.
- Cut into rectangular or square shapes by using a knife.
- The fresh and tasty focaccia is ready.
Unique Additions
Herbs:
- Try this recipe with fresh or dried herbs like thyme leaves, oregano, rosemary, and parsley.
Vegetables:
- Customize with vegetables like olives, sliced bell peppers, capers, asparagus, sliced zucchini, eggplant, potato slices, and sliced heirloom tomatoes.
Protein options:
- You can add tofu, seitan, or tempeh bacon as a protein option.
Vegan Cheese:
- We used vegan grated cheese like ricotta, mozzarella, or parmesan for a cheesy texture.
Sauces:
- Accompany it with dairy-free alfredo sauce, pizza sauce, or vegan pesto sauce.
SERVING IDEAS:
- You can pair it with satisfying and wholesome soups like tomato soup, and butternut squash soup.
- Enjoy it as a snack with olive oil (for dipping) and balsamic vinegar.
- We can make the sandwich using this focaccia bread. Cut the bread into two pieces. Apply the first layer of hummus and the second layer of different veggies.
- It goes well with Italian-style dishes like vegan lentil balls, chickpea soup, vegan lasagna, and spaghetti.
- You can prepare focaccia pizza using this bread. Add vegan pepperoni, grated vegan cheese, pizza sauce, dried herbs, and dried herbs as layers, then bake it in the oven.
Tips
- Use active and dried instant yeast. Expired yeast will not lift the dough properly.
- Normal or cold water will make the lumps in the yeast.
- We used slightly warm water. Warm water in a microwave oven for 1-2 minutes.
- Before baking, adjust the oven temperature so the bread bakes well.
- Proper kneading will make the best dough.
- If the dough mixture is dry, add two or three tablespoons of plant-based milk
Storage Information
Fridge:
- Focaccia tastes best when freshly cooked and hot. But you can save it in a plastic-sealed jar and refrigerate it for 4 to 7 days.
Freezer:
- Pack the leftover dish in a plastic cover and freeze it for 1 to 2 months.
